Justin Timberlake faced challenges while undergoing field sobriety tests during a traffic stop in the Hamptons in 2024. Video footage released recently showed Timberlake struggling with tasks such as walking in a straight line and balancing on one leg, which are standard sobriety tests. The pop star remarked to officers that the tests were particularly difficult.
The footage, spanning about eight hours, captured Timberlake’s initial encounter with Sag Harbor police. He was stopped after allegedly running a stop sign, swerving out of his lane, and emitting an alcohol odor from his BMW in June of that year. Timberlake informed the officers that he had only consumed one martini and was following his friends to their destination in the historic whaling village of Sag Harbor.
During the interaction, Timberlake mentioned he was on a world tour when questioned by the officers. He expressed nervousness and confusion when asked to walk heel-to-toe and lift one leg as part of the sobriety tests. Apologizing and stating his heart was racing, Timberlake appeared flustered at times.
After pleading guilty to a reduced charge, Timberlake was informed that he would be held overnight at the police station. He expressed surprise and asked the officers to keep the light on in his cell as they closed the door.
The release of the video by Sag Harbor police followed a legal dispute regarding privacy concerns raised by Timberlake’s lawyers. Initially, they sought to prevent the video’s disclosure, citing the potential invasion of Timberlake’s privacy and harm to his reputation. However, they later agreed to release a redacted version of the footage after negotiations with the village authorities.
In response to the resolution, Sag Harbor officials expressed satisfaction with complying with public records laws and addressing privacy and safety considerations. Timberlake, as part of his plea deal, delivered a public safety message warning against impaired driving and faced penalties including a fine, community service, and a license suspension.
