The mastermind behind the award-winning animated film “KPop Demon Hunters” has been honored with the key to Toronto, her hometown. Maggie Kang, a Korean-Canadian filmmaker, received the key during a panel discussion at Departure Festival, where Mayor Olivia Chow surprised her on stage.
Mayor Chow commended Kang for her achievements and highlighted how her journey would serve as a source of inspiration for future generations. Kang graciously accepted the key and shared a photo moment with Mayor Chow and Cindy Gouveia, the president of her alma mater, Sheridan College.
Since its premiere, “KPop Demon Hunters” has broken records on Netflix as the most-watched film of all time, accompanied by a chart-topping soundtrack and approval for a sequel. During the panel, Kang hinted at plans for the upcoming film, expressing her commitment to maintaining the same level of dedication and creating a movie that resonates with her vision.
Later that day, Kang is set to receive the cultural innovator award at the Departure Honours gala.
