Mysterious Object Spotted in B.C. Skies Leaves Residents Puzzled
Residents in various regions of British Columbia, including the north, Interior, parts of Alberta, and Vancouver Island, were left perplexed by an unusual sighting on Tuesday night. Between 10:15 and 10:30 p.m. PT, numerous witnesses observed a large, white object slowly traversing the horizon before vanishing from sight.
Sarah and Jared Siemens from Vanderhoof, B.C., who had earlier discussed the existence of UFOs with their son, were astonished when they witnessed the phenomenon shortly after. Videos capturing the event were shared on community Facebook groups spanning from Williams Lake to Prince George to Fort St. John, covering hundreds of kilometers. Reports also came in from locations like the Nass Valley, Kamloops, Oliver, Vancouver Island, and Sherwood Park, Alberta.
Speculations about the sighting ranged from a weather balloon to a SpaceX rocket. Malhar Kendurkar, from the Prince George Astronomical Observatory, identified the object as SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California earlier that evening. According to Kendurkar, the rocket’s peculiar appearance was due to a phenomenon known as the “jellyfish effect,” caused by the booster’s exhaust expanding in the upper atmosphere, creating a glowing cloud-like appearance.
Michael Unger, director of programming at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver, noted the increasing frequency of unidentified sightings in the night sky, attributed to the growing presence of drones, private satellites, and rockets like those operated by SpaceX. The trend of capturing and sharing such phenomena aids scientists in monitoring celestial activities.
The incident has sparked curiosity among observers, emphasizing the vastness of unexplored elements in the sky and space, as evidenced by recent events like a meteor sighting in southern British Columbia. The proliferation of such occurrences underscores the importance of continued vigilance and exploration of the cosmic realm.
