Canadian runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, a two-time Olympian, has announced his retirement after a successful 15-year career in track and road racing. Philibert-Thiboutot, 34, marked his marathon debut in New York City by finishing 21st in the professional men’s group with a time of two hours, 26 minutes, and 25 seconds. Despite facing cramps around the 28-29 kilometer mark, he persevered to complete the race.

Reflecting on his final campaign, Philibert-Thiboutot achieved personal best times in various indoor and outdoor events. Notably, he set a national record of 28 minutes and six seconds in the Canadian 10K Road Running Championships. Additionally, he excelled in competitions such as the NACAC Championships and the Canadian 5K Road Running Championships.

Philibert-Thiboutot, who made his Olympic debut in 2016 and later competed in multiple World Athletics Championships, expressed contentment with his career, acknowledging the physical and mental toll of his athletic journey. Despite not qualifying for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, he made a strong comeback in Paris last year, achieving notable performances.

In other race highlights from New York City, Hellen Obiri of Kenya set a new women’s course record, while Benson Kipruto clinched victory in the men’s race in a nail-biting finish. Obiri’s impressive performance saw her break the previous course record and secure a comfortable lead over her competitors. Kipruto, alongside fellow Kenyan runner Alexander Mutiso, showcased exceptional determination in a closely contested race.

The marathon event also featured top wheelchair athletes Marcel Hug and Susannah Scaroni, who exhibited dominant performances in their respective categories. Hug claimed his seventh victory in the NYC marathon, while Scaroni defended her title with a commanding win, further solidifying their status as elite wheelchair racers.

The New York City marathon witnessed remarkable achievements and fierce competition, with athletes from various nations showcasing their talent and determination in one of the most iconic races in the world.
