Rugby Canada has announced the successful conclusion of its fundraising campaign, “Mission: Win Rugby World Cup 2025,” surpassing its target by raising over $1 million. The contributions, combined with $2.6 million from the governing body, filled the financial gap in Canada head coach Kevin Rouet’s preparation strategy. Despite finishing as runners-up in the September 27 final against top-ranked England at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium, the campaign garnered $1.06 million through donations from more than 1,500 supporters, including community rugby clubs, the Canadian Rugby Foundation’s Monty Heald Fund, and generous individual contributions.
Expressing gratitude, Rouet emphasized the impact of the campaign on and off the field, providing essential resources for the team’s World Cup journey. The raised funds facilitated two additional pre-tournament camps, one in Chula Vista, Calif., before the Pacific Four Series in May, and another in Perth, Ont., ahead of test matches in South Africa in July. Additionally, the financial support covered travel expenses, accommodations beyond the World Cup, nutritional needs, and bolstered medical and strength training resources during the tournament.
Rugby Canada’s CEO, Nathan Bombrys, commended the nationwide support that exceeded the fundraising goal, highlighting the belief and unity showcased throughout the campaign. Rouet acknowledged the ongoing budget constraints faced by the Canadian team, emphasizing the continuous effort to maximize resources effectively.
Looking ahead, Rouet anticipates potential financial challenges in the coming years, especially with lower budgets expected post-2025 Women’s World Cup, and subsequent major sporting events in 2027 and 2028. Despite uncertainties, he remains optimistic about the federation’s progress and growth, acknowledging the incremental improvements year by year. The coach believes that the recent success will pave the way for future opportunities, although the specifics remain unclear.
