Big canines are known for their loyalty, affection, and sweetness but are often disregarded in pet adoption processes, according to a municipal agency. Toronto Animal Services has partnered with NutriCanine, a local fresh dog food company, to alter perceptions about large dogs. Their second annual campaign, running from March 23 to April 23, aims to facilitate the adoption of big dogs in the Greater Toronto Area.
The agency will waive all adoption fees for large dogs and large-breed puppies in Toronto to encourage more families to consider adopting bigger pets. A large dog is defined as one weighing over 50 pounds or a puppy expected to exceed that weight.
Elana Trainoff, partnerships manager at Toronto Animal Services, highlighted that people may feel intimidated by the idea of owning a large dog due to concerns about space, exercise requirements, and lifestyle compatibility. However, Trainoff emphasized that big dogs offer immense love and could significantly impact one’s life if given a chance.
Trainoff mentioned that the agency initiated the campaign because large dogs tend to wait longer for adoption solely because of their size. She emphasized that many big dogs make excellent companions adaptable to various living conditions, with some being content as “couch potatoes” enjoying walks in smaller spaces. Each dog has a unique background, and the best way to determine compatibility is by meeting them in person.
Last year, the campaign led to 58 adoptions. Trainoff emphasized that the adoption process remains unchanged, requiring potential pet owners to visit the city’s webpage to view available dogs, contact the shelter housing their preferred dog to schedule a visit with family members and existing pets, and find the perfect match.
This drive aims to showcase the love and companionship big dogs can offer and provide them with the chance to find caring forever homes.
