U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to hold a meeting with New York City’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, at the White House this Friday. This would mark the first encounter between the Republican leader and the democratic socialist who recently secured victory in the mayoral election.
Mamdani and Trump have exchanged criticisms, with Trump supporting Mamdani’s opponent, Andrew Cuomo, and Mamdani voicing disapproval of the Trump administration’s policies, particularly regarding immigration enforcement and U.S. backing of Israel during the Gaza conflict.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Trump confirmed the meeting scheduled for November 21st at the Oval Office, indicating mutual consent for the gathering.
Earlier in the week, Mamdani informed reporters that his team had initiated contact with the White House to arrange the meeting. A spokesperson for Mamdani stated that the mayor-elect intends to address public safety, economic stability, and affordability matters during the Washington meeting with Trump.
Throughout the mayoral campaign, Trump had threatened to withhold significant federal funding from the city if Mamdani emerged victorious. New York City is slated to receive $7.4 billion US in federal aid for the fiscal year 2026, constituting approximately 6.4% of the city’s total budget, according to a report from the New York State Comptroller.
Despite Trump’s erroneous characterization of Mamdani as a “communist” since his ascent, Mamdani has focused on countering Trump’s policies in the city, notably concerning immigration, as a central theme of his successful campaign.
In his victory speech earlier this month, Mamdani expressed his aspiration for New York to serve as a model for defeating the president. He has also emphasized the goal of “Trump-proofing” New York upon assuming office in January, while expressing willingness to collaborate with various stakeholders, including the president, for the betterment of New Yorkers.
The swearing-in ceremony for Mamdani as mayor is set for January 1.
