U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to halt immigration permanently from various countries, with his Department of Homeland Security ready to implement his directives.
Trump’s extensive social media tirade was posted just before midnight on Thursday, following the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., who were on duty under Trump’s orders the day before.
The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who previously worked with the CIA in Afghanistan, is facing first-degree murder charges for the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom of the West Virginia National Guard. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey praised Beckstrom for her bravery and dedication.
Lakanwal, the alleged perpetrator, is accused of driving from Washington state to ambush the National Guard members near a D.C. subway station, resulting in Specialist Beckstrom’s death and critical injuries to Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe.
Following the soldier’s death, Lakanwal’s charges were elevated to first-degree murder. He immigrated to the U.S. in 2021 as part of the program aiding Afghan allies post-U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Trump’s social media messages emphasized the need for reverse migration, particularly from Third World countries, citing an alleged COVID-19 fraud case involving Somalis in Minnesota. He also criticized the migration impact on employment and crime, urging an end to migration from certain regions.
The Department of Homeland Security echoed Trump’s sentiments online, calling for support to deport and arrest individuals. Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a pause in visa issuance for Afghan passport holders, and USCIS Director Joseph Edlow suspended asylum decisions for enhanced vetting.
Trump’s comments have drawn concern from refugee organizations about potential backlash. The administration’s efforts to tighten immigration policies have sparked debate and raised questions about due process and treatment of migrants.
The immigration landscape under Trump’s administration has been marked by controversial policies and actions, including travel bans and deportations. The administration’s stance on asylum seekers and birthright citizenship has also been widely criticized.
As Trump continues to advocate for stricter immigration measures, his approach has faced criticism from various quarters, with concerns about potential adverse effects on communities and individuals affected by the policies.
