Police in Longueuil, Quebec, have apprehended a woman following the tragic death of a newborn discovered in a bus shelter. The baby was found in a bus shelter on Chambly Road near Briggs Street. Longueuil police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre confirmed the arrest of a 33-year-old woman, whose mental and physical well-being is currently under assessment.
Although the police have not officially identified the woman as the baby’s mother, they are considering charging her with infanticide. The newborn was found in a distressing state, still attached to the placenta, naked, and suffering from extreme cold. Paramedics from the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie provided immediate medical assistance and resuscitation efforts were made en route to the hospital.
A distress call made to 911 at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Monday reported the presence of a baby in the bus shelter. The infant received prompt first aid and was swiftly transported to the hospital for further treatment. Law enforcement authorities established a command post at the scene and advised the public to steer clear of the area.
The Longueuil Mayor, Catherine Fournier, expressed deep concern over the abandonment and subsequent death of the newborn, highlighting the unsettling parallels with a recent similar incident. Earlier this month, a newborn was discovered on the doorstep of a residence on Bourgeoys Street in Longueuil. This baby was found swaddled in a blanket with the umbilical cord still attached.
Police have released footage in an effort to identify a person of interest seen carrying what appeared to be a baby in a separate incident, but they have clarified that the two events are unrelated. Mayor Fournier assured that the city will closely follow the investigation while providing necessary support to the individual undergoing questioning.
