Ravens and crows are well-known for their mimicry skills, but a particular bird is making waves for its unique and loud imitation. Dayna Slater, the founder of Good Caws Crow Rescue in Prince George, B.C., shared how a three-year-old raven named Huxley has taken a liking to mimicking her dramatic sneezes. Huxley has been captured on video in the backyard, repeatedly producing a loud sneezing sound along with saying his own name.
Slater established Good Caws after being contacted by friends and neighbors who found injured corvids, knowing her affection for the birds. Becoming a licensed wildlife rescue, she now cares for various corvids, including 10 crows, two ravens, and two magpies. Huxley, who came into her care in 2023 after falling from his nest as a hatchling, is now a permanent resident and a representative for the rescue organization.
Describing the birds as mythical and deserving of respect, Slater emphasizes the importance of aiding these creatures. Huxley, apart from his sneezing antics, enjoys squeaky toys, baths, and the company of a crow named Bobbi. Known for picking up phrases, he delights in serenading the other birds at the rescue with his chatter.
Despite his endearing traits, Huxley has his preferences, disliking snow and cold weather, opting to stay indoors during harsh winter conditions. Slater’s fondness for these birds stems from their distinct personalities and intelligence, with Huxley standing out as a prime example. The rescue’s mission extends to rehabilitating and releasing birds back into the wild when possible, highlighting their dedication to the well-being of these avian creatures.
