An inquiry has commenced regarding the passing of a Wiikwemkoong resident who died four days after being detained at the Sudbury District Jail. Justin Alexander Trudeau, aged 44, passed away on February 13, 2021, at the Sudbury correctional facility. The cause of his demise has not been disclosed to the jury yet.

During the opening day of the eight-day inquiry on Monday, discussions revolved around the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the correctional system. Testimony was provided by two nurses who were on duty at the jail when Trudeau passed away.

Trudeau received medical attention for an infected hand wound upon his admission to the jail. Although he occasionally used an inhaler, he did not have one or a prescription when he was arrested. The jury learned that Trudeau contacted his mother the night before his demise, expressing his need for an inhaler.

A statement from Trudeau’s partner described him as a dedicated father with a passion for the outdoors. Additionally, a statement from Trudeau’s daughter expressed regret for not getting the chance to fully know her father before his passing.

Adele Bluemeke, a registered nurse at the Sudbury jail during Trudeau’s time there, testified that the COVID-19 situation significantly increased the workload for nurses. Due to pandemic restrictions, doctors were not physically present at the jail, leading to consultations being conducted predominantly over the phone. Patients in isolation due to COVID-19 or potential infection were under strict movement limitations.

Bluemeke highlighted the challenges faced in the jail environment due to understaffing and the ever-changing pandemic protocols. She emphasized the need for more resources and stable staffing to ensure the safety and well-being of both inmates and staff.

The inquest’s presiding officer questioned Bluemeke about potential recommendations to enhance the working conditions at the Sudbury jail and benefit inmates like Mr. Trudeau. Bluemeke suggested improvements to the system to prevent future tragedies and emphasized the importance of adequate staffing to maintain quality care and safety.

The inquiry will reconvene on Tuesday to further delve into the circumstances surrounding Trudeau’s untimely demise.
