Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev was hospitalized following an on-ice incident during Saturday night’s 5-2 triumph against the Philadelphia Flyers. Head coach Craig Berube confirmed that Tanev had mobility in all limbs after colliding with Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov with 11:37 remaining in the game. Although the impact was shoulder-to-shoulder, Tanev’s head jerked back upon contact, causing him to remain on the ice.
Trainers promptly attended to Tanev, stabilizing his head and neck before transferring him onto a stretcher and guiding him off the rink. This marked Tanev’s return to play after sitting out four games due to a concussion. Michkov received a minor penalty for interference during the incident.
Following the match, Berube disclosed that Tanev was transported to a Philadelphia hospital for examinations and confirmed the presence of movement in all extremities. Berube mentioned the possibility of Tanev traveling back to Toronto with the team, expressing optimism about Tanev’s condition.
Despite the unsettling situation, Auston Matthews, who netted a goal during the game, conveyed his concern for Tanev’s well-being, emphasizing his importance to the team. Matthews acknowledged the distressing sight of the stretcher being brought out and expressed solidarity with his teammate, joining in thoughts and prayers for Tanev’s swift recovery.
