BC Conservative MLA Boultbee Resigns, Calls for Leader’s Ouster

Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee has resigned from the B.C. Conservative caucus and has called for the party leader’s resignation. Boultbee stated during a press conference at the legislature on Monday that she is leaving due to what she perceives as John Rustad’s ineffective leadership.

According to Boultbee, she decided to leave after feeling that John Rustad’s leadership was deteriorating. She emphasized that her departure was prompted by Rustad’s actions and stated that she is holding him accountable. Boultbee urged Rustad to step down, expressing concern that his leadership would lead to an advantage for the NDP in the upcoming election.

Responding to Boultbee’s resignation, Rustad accused her of leaking confidential information from the caucus to the media. He mentioned that such leaks were unacceptable and needed to be addressed. Boultbee denied these allegations, labeling them as false and threatened legal action if Rustad persisted in making such claims.

During their public exchanges, Rustad also raised concerns about Boultbee’s positions on various issues and cast doubt on her mental well-being. Boultbee countered by stating that she had previously shared her mental health struggles with Rustad, particularly in relation to a distressing child abuse case she had been handling. She criticized Rustad for using this personal information against her, questioning his integrity as a leader.

Following Boultbee’s departure, Conservative MLA Brennan Day criticized Rustad’s remarks, emphasizing the harmful impact of weaponizing or trivializing health conditions. Boultbee indicated that she would consider rejoining the Conservative Party under new leadership, expressing dissatisfaction with Rustad’s leadership style, which she claimed did not allow input from party members.

Despite surviving a leadership review with substantial support, Rustad has faced internal challenges within the caucus. The B.C. Conservatives have seen several MLAs leave, including Boultbee and others forming new parties or becoming Independents. Boultbee and Sturko, another former Conservative MLA, hinted at the possibility of collaborating on common issues, although no firm decisions have been made yet.

Rustad’s leadership style, particularly his handling of internal matters and accusations of leaking, has caused divisions within the party. Some members have criticized his approach, including his actions during the fall session where he directed MLAs to abstain from voting on a specific motion. Concerns have been raised about the party’s ability to effectively hold the NDP government to account amidst the internal turmoil.

Despite the challenges, Rustad remains focused on the party’s goal of challenging the NDP’s governance. The party’s direction, according to Rustad, is singular in its aim to oppose the current government.
