Residents affected by the Israel-Hamas peace agreement are cautious about the ceasefire’s lasting impact. Rani Hemaid, a Hamilton resident, continues to worry about his family in Gaza, as not all of them have been able to reunite in Canada. While the ceasefire offers temporary relief from the constant threat of bombings, Hemaid remains uneasy about the situation.

The ceasefire, which commenced on October 11 following an extended period of conflict, was hailed as a breakthrough by U.S. President Donald Trump on October 14. However, Hemaid and other Palestinians express skepticism about the peace deal’s sustainability, given the history of violence in the region.

Israeli airstrikes over the weekend resulted in the deaths of 28 individuals in Gaza, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order a forceful response to what he deemed as Hamas’s violations of the ceasefire. The interruption of aid supply into Gaza due to these violations has further complicated the situation.

Journalist Fares Alghoul, based in Hamilton, emphasizes the fragility of the ceasefire agreement, noting the challenges faced by Gaza’s residents despite the temporary halt in hostilities. Alghoul highlights the struggles of families returning to homes destroyed by the conflict, with essential services still disrupted.

Canadian trauma surgeon Dr. Anas Al-Kassem, who has provided medical aid in Gaza, raises concerns about the dire conditions in local hospitals. Al-Kassem points out the lack of essential medical equipment and personnel, leading to severe challenges in providing healthcare to the injured population. Despite the ceasefire, the situation on the ground remains critical.

The ongoing uncertainty and humanitarian crisis in Gaza continue to weigh heavily on individuals like Hemaid, who anxiously await updates on the well-being of their loved ones. The need for sustained international support and immediate action to address the healthcare crisis in Gaza is paramount for the long-term well-being of its residents.
