Netflix has officially announced the development of a sequel to the highly popular film “KPop Demon Hunters,” which holds the record as the most-watched movie on the streaming platform. The upcoming installment will continue the creative partnership between Netflix and co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. This project marks the first venture under their exclusive multi-year agreement for writing and directing animated content.
Maggie Kang, a Korean filmmaker with roots in Toronto, expressed her pride in the audience’s demand for more of the Korean narrative and characters in the film. Animated by Sony Pictures Animation, the original musical movie follows the journey of K-pop girl trio Huntrix, who lead a double life as demon hunters while navigating their superstardom. The film’s breakout song “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Recognized for its excellence, the film has garnered multiple awards such as Best Animated Feature and Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards, as well as Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song at the Golden Globes. Furthermore, it received two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. Additionally, “Golden” secured a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media, marking the first Grammy win for a K-Pop song.
In January 2026, Netflix revealed that the movie had broken platform records, amassing 482 million views within six months, with an additional 32 million views for its lyric videos. The film’s soundtrack continues to gain global popularity. Appelhans emphasized the importance of a clear creative vision for the sequel, stating that it is crucial to have a solid direction from the outset to ensure the project resonates with both creators and audiences.
