Raphaëlle Tousignant, a prominent para hockey player and the first woman to represent Canada in a major international event, has revealed her battle with breast cancer. In an emotional Instagram post, she shared her recent diagnosis, expressing her determination to face this new challenge with courage and perseverance.
Tousignant’s journey in overcoming adversity began at the age of 10 when she underwent leg amputation due to bone cancer. Hailing from Terrebonne, Quebec, she joined the Canadian women’s Para hockey team at the age of 14 and quickly established herself as a key player. Her remarkable skills earned her a spot on Canada’s national team for the world championship in 2023, making history as the first woman to achieve this feat.
At 23 years old, Tousignant had set her sights on becoming the first female para hockey player to compete for Canada at the 2026 Paralympic Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy. Despite the mixed-gender nature of Para hockey at the Paralympics, only a few women have participated in the Games, with teams having the option to include a female player in their roster.
Despite the setback of her cancer diagnosis, Tousignant remains resolute in pursuing her Olympic dream. She emphasized her unwavering commitment to continue training and striving towards her goal, finding renewed purpose and motivation in her workouts and time on the ice.
