Poilievre, in an interview with CBC’s Rosemary Barton Live, highlighted Carney’s unfulfilled promises made during the election campaign earlier this year.
Carney had pledged to secure a favorable deal by July 21 and negotiate successfully with President Trump. Poilievre questioned the feasibility of these promises, emphasizing that Carney’s commitment was not just a casual assurance but a significant pledge. The focus of Carney’s election campaign was on managing relations with the U.S. administration.
Negotiations aimed at resolving tariff issues were progressing until Trump abruptly halted discussions following an Ontario government advertisement that referenced former U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s anti-tariff sentiments. Trump indicated that Carney had apologized for the ad, which was withdrawn after being aired over the weekend, including during the World Series on American networks.
In response to questions from reporters, Trump acknowledged his good relationship with Carney but criticized the content of the advertisement. The Prime Minister’s Office did not confirm whether Carney had personally apologized for the ad.
Trump stated that there are no plans to resume trade talks with Canada. Poilievre, when asked about his approach to handling relations with Trump, emphasized the importance of strengthening the economy to bolster Canada’s position. He refrained from directly comparing his strategy with Carney’s, highlighting that he is not the prime minister currently.
