Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, condemned an explosion on a crucial railway line used for supplying aid and weapons to Ukraine as an unprecedented act of sabotage on Monday. A security source in Poland disclosed that authorities are looking into potential connections to Russia, Belarus, or their allies in relation to the blast that occurred on the route connecting Warsaw to southeastern Poland on Sunday.
During his visit to the site, Tusk assured that Poland is determined to apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the incident, emphasizing the significance of the affected railway line for delivering essential supplies. Polish officials confirmed that an explosive device was detonated on a section of the track between Warsaw and Lublin, leading to damage to overhead cables along the same route, both incidents likely being acts of sabotage.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed solidarity with Polish authorities, awaiting the results of the investigation. Western officials have accused Russia and its proxies of orchestrating numerous attacks in Europe since the Ukrainian invasion to sow fear and destabilize the region.
Tomasz Siemoniak, Poland’s security services minister, highlighted the high probability that the sabotage on the railway line was orchestrated by foreign entities. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced plans to inspect the 120-kilometer Warsaw-Lublin-Hrubieszów line, which serves as a crucial transportation link to Ukraine.
While addressing concerns of alleged Russian interference, Finnish President Alexander Stubb urged European nations to exercise caution and avoid overreacting to such incidents, cautioning that destabilization efforts through misinformation campaigns have become a new norm.
Stubb emphasized the need for a composed approach, considering Moscow’s tactics of engaging in both kinetic warfare in Ukraine and hybrid warfare in Europe. Russia has consistently denied involvement in previous sabotage allegations, including incidents related to drones and severed cables in European territories.
