The popular CBS TV show “Tracker” is moving its production from Vancouver and southern British Columbia to California for its upcoming fourth season. Lead actor Justin Hartley stars as a survivalist who tracks down missing individuals for rewards. The relocation to Los Angeles is facilitated by a $48 million US tax credit, as reported by entertainment news site Deadline. The show premiered in February 2024 after the Super Bowl and has been a ratings success for CBS, airing on Global TV in Canada.
Gemma Martini, CEO of Martini Film Studios, expressed disappointment over losing “Tracker” from its Langley facility, emphasizing the economic impact on local crews and the industry. The series, consisting of 22 episodes, frequently filmed in various locations across British Columbia.
Showrunner Elwood Reid expressed gratitude to the Vancouver community for supporting the show’s first three seasons but looks forward to starting production in Los Angeles with the benefit of the tax incentive program. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office praised the move, anticipating job opportunities and economic growth for local businesses.
“Tracker” is among 16 productions approved for tax credits under California’s $750 million incentive program, with the largest credit awarded to date. The state aims to attract more studios by offering these incentives. Despite the shift, British Columbia has enhanced its own incentive program, contributing to its competitiveness in the industry.
The film and television sector significantly impacts the BC economy, generating $3.1 billion and creating 42,000 jobs in 2024. Industry experts hope that ongoing incentives will attract more major projects to the province, sustaining growth. While “Tracker” relocates, other productions are active in BC, showcasing the region’s diverse filming opportunities and talent pool.
